The San Jose Holistic Health Care Clinic is currently offering a series of wellness classes designed especially for the working force of Silicon Valley. Focusing on illness and injury prevention, these classes teach attitudes and techniques which promote health in a workplace context. However, this is more than a simple demonstration on proper posture and ergonomics.
We have treated plenty of patients who experience back pain despite having a good chair and having attended a company-sponsored seminar on proper sitting. Why? Because ergonomics is only a part of the necessary approach to teaching good workplace health. Our three part series is built around the philosophy that there are three parts to any injury:
1. Mental & Emotional
2. Physical
3. Chemical &Nutritional
In the first class, we talk about mental and emotional stress and how it contributes to injury. We teach various relaxation exercises and meditation techniques which help employees maintain emotional balance and keep a sharp, focused mind. We start with short exercises and meditations that employees can practice at their workstations, and move on to more intensive techniques to do at home.
We address physical stress in the second class by introducing stretching, strengthening, and conditioning exercises designed to counterbalance repetitive stress movements or staying in a sitting position too long. Again, some exercises are designed for quick breaks at work, while others are designed for a lengthier session outside of the workplace.
Finally, we address the chemical and nutritional imbalances that result from poor nutrition, chronic overwork, and lack of sleep. We show employees how to recognize the warning signs of poor nutrition, how to restore chemical balance to the body, and help employees create suitable diets for themselves. We also teach special exercises that can help workers revitalize themselves, stimulate the flow of energy, and maintain a healthy, productive body.
We are available to come to your company and teach these classes. We can also tailor the classes in both form and content to meet the differing needs and sizes of companies. We all want to improve our quality of life. And we are all too aware of the ever increasing cost of health care. Many corporate executives are increasingly seeing the wisdom of implementing programs that promote wellness and preempt illness, thereby ensuring a more motivated, fit, and productive workforce.
